Discounts

Coupon? Discount? Yes!

Discount codes are synonymous with coupon codes. In Liftoff, you can choose what your code is, how much it's worth, who can use it, and many other conditions. Discounts are completely customizable! Discounts are not stackable, meaning that only one discount per order may be applied. Note also that discount codes cannot be repeated; each code must be unique.

Codes

To add a new code, click the Add Discount Code button. Configure your new code as follows:

Discount Code

This field is REQUIRED.

This is the actual code your customer will provide during checkout. This field is alphanumeric, must be at least 3 characters long, and cannot exceed 20 characters. An example might be MARCH20 or FREESHIP.

Description

This field is REQUIRED.

This is the description of your code that will be displayed after applying it during checkout. For example, "Congratulations! You've just earned 20% off your order!" or, "Who likes free shipping? You do!"

Discount Type

This field is REQUIRED.

Select what type of discount this will be. You can set it to discount a percentage of the order cost, take a certain dollar amount off, or deduct from a depletable account.

Note that the "depletable account" function is now obsolete in favor of Liftoff's gift cards/budgets tool and, outside of rare circumstances, shouldn't be used. It will be removed in a future Liftoff release.

Amount

This field is REQUIRED.

Enter the amount relative to the discount type. Enter percentages as whole numbers, and enter dollar amounts as decimals. Numbers and decimals are the only allowable characters; this field does not support dollar or percentage signs.

Examples: If your discount is for 27% off, enter 27. If your discount is meant to chop $27.00 off of the order cost, enter 27.00.

Apply To

This field is REQUIRED.

Once you've defined your discount type and amount, you must decide how it's applied. You can select between the order subtotal, the shipping only, or the combined order subtotal and shipping. Please note that if you have selected order subtotal and shipping, the amount is applied to the subtotal first and any remainder toward the shipping.

Conditions

This field is REQUIRED.

This is where you define the parameters, or conditions, of your discount.

  • All items
Selecting this option will apply the code to all items available to your customer on your site.
  • Only items in a specific category
Selecting this option restricts application of the code only to items in a specific category. If you select this option, you must choose your category from the dropdown box.
  • Only items with a specific product code
Selecting this option restricts application of the code only to a single, specific product. If you select this option, you must choose the applicable product from the dropdown box.
  • Only items with a specific custom product field value
Selecting this option restricts application of the code only to items that have a specific custom product field value. If you choose this option, you must choose your custom product field from the list and provide the field value for that custom product field. For example, you may have defined a custom product field for internal use (i.e. not displayed to customers) such as "Budget Category". On the custom fields tab of your product page, you may have entered a value such as "Swag" or "Marketing". If you wanted this discount to only apply to "Swag"; products, you would choose "Budget Category" from the custom product field drop-down box and type "Swag" in the field value.

Usage

This field is REQUIRED.

This is where you decide who is eligible to use this discount. You can choose:

  • May be used by anyone with the code
No restrictions. Anyone can use this discount if they have the code on hand.
  • May be used by any customer in a role
This allows you to define a specific group of customers who can use this discount. Once you've defined a user role, select it from the dropdown on this Discounts page, and only customers you've assigned to this role will be eligible to use the discount.
  • Assigned to a single customer
Just as it sounds: No one will be able to use the discount code other than one person you designate.

Application Method

This field is OPTIONAL.

If you don't want your customer(s) to have to enter the code, you can elect to have it applied automatically at checkout.

Per Customer Limit

This field is OPTIONAL.

This is where you can define how many times a customer can use this code. Leaving this field blank will default to unlimited uses. If it is a one-time-use code, enter the value as 1.

Start Date

This field is OPTIONAL.

If you want a code to be available for use starting on a specific date, enter it here. You are not required to provide an expiration date just because you set a start date.

Expiration Date

This field is OPTIONAL.

If you want a code to stop working on a specific date, enter it here. You are not required to provide a start date just because you set an expiration date. Note that specifying both a start date and expiration date provides a "window of time" in which the budget code will be valid.

Settings

By default, discounts are not enabled. If you wish to allow discounts, you must check the "Enable discounts on my site" button followed by the Save Changes button. There are two optional fields to define how these are displayed:

Display Name for a Discount

This field controls how you refer to a discount on your site. Perhaps you prefer the term "Coupon" instead. Please note that whatever you enter here will be followed by the word "Code". For example, if you type "Coupon" in this field, it will display during checkout as "Coupon Code", but if you type "Coupon Code" in this field, it will display during checkout as"Coupon Code Code".

Discount Code Entry Prompt

If you would like to change what the prompt to enter your code is (Perhaps you want it to say "Enter your Coupon Code Here:"), this is where you define it.
